Gov. Newsom says more AI regulations on the way

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that he anticipated signing more technology safety regulations after an artificial intelligence researcher said California-based behemoth NVIDIA was "racing" to build technology that could bring an end to human life.

An NVIDIA researcher announced his resignation from the company in a Sunday Instagram post that went viral and prompted calls for federal lawmakers to intervene legislatively.

He said in an interview that he quit three months before his equity could vest, which means he likely gave up earning millions if NVIDIA goes public as anticipated by the end of October.

Last year, California enacted the Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act (SB 58), which mandates that the largest AI companies publish their safety and security protocols on their social media.

On Monday, Newsom praised that bill as making California the first in the U.S. to regulate large data models during an interview at an Oracle-sponsored event in San Jose.

However, this week the bill's author said that it left out kill switches and third-party auditor mandates, which meant it would not have covered a July incident in which 1,000 xAI agents went rogue and attacked a rival machine learning platform.

Newsom has long been considered pro-technology, and has previously touted AI's potential as a source of jobs and tax revenue that will maintain California's competitive edge in the global marketplace.

Newsom said in the interview that he anticipated more forthcoming safety legislation, in contrast to the activist approach urged by advisors in the Trump White House.
